BOOK QUIVER - Be brave with "Queenie Wahine" & "Little Millie"

Updated: Aug 23, 2020

Surfing the couch instead of the waves has become the new normal for present-day pandemic surfers. And with quarantine and closed breaks part of the daily surf forecast lingo, ocean-dwellers are finding other ways to "wet their gills."

Backyard books are part of the quarantine routine.

For us, that meant swapping boards for books. Tribe of Daughters' action adventure sports series is one we'd highly recommend if you're looking to bring the beach park or skate park into your home. It's helped us a lot during these times of social distancing.

Both children's books, "Queenie Wahine, Little Surfer Girl" and "Little Millie Ford and Her New Skateboard," are by sister surfers Ashley Norris and Jess Lowcher. The dynamic duo keeps the stoke alive during quarantine–with stories encouraging young female surfer Queenie and skater Millie to choose bravery over perfection.

While Hawaii allowed surfing and other ocean activities, during the stay-at-home order, our family chose to wait it out a bit. And in doing so, we (mind) surfed alongside Queenie Wahine and shredded the pavement with Little Millie Ford. Both main characters show the strength and spunk that women bring to sports.

Like Queenie Wahine, we want our two-year-old daughter to be courageous–in and out of the water. We want her to take challenges head on, like Little Millie Ford facing her fear of the half pipe. Both of their stories felt relatable in their own way and made us feel good about the active lifestyle we've chosen.

Our daughter loved these books so much, she'd fall asleep beside thema rather familiar stoke shared by her surf-obsessed parents. Growing up, we'd snooze alongside our new boards–only to get up and wax up before heading to the beach at dawn. Those were the days!

And nowadays, we find a familiar joy in reading books like these to our little; from the rhyming stanzas to the gorgeous watercolor illustrations, the Tribe of Daughters' series has already become a prized part of our bookshelf quiver.

When the reading is done, little ones can enjoy coloring pages at the end of each book. Like most, we had already breezed through our quarantine coloring books; it was nice to find some fresh pages for her to ink!

Overall, we're super stoked on these books and appreciate the heartfelt effort put into each page, by surfers just like us!
