Exploring Boulder trails with a baby

Updated: Jun 9, 2020

From sledding to snowboarding, there's never a shortage of outdoor adventure in Colorado. Outside of the ski season, our Colorado fam is all about hiking and biking. And while we can't claim to be experts in either of those areas, we've visited enough times to experience a little bit of everything.

Exploring Boulder's most iconic landmark, the Flatirons, is one springtime outing we look forward to. The slanted sandstone formations on the west side of town make up Boulder's foothills. Trails take hikers up and around to panoramic views of the busy town below.

For us, it made sense to drive up to one of the trailheads instead; we didn't pack the right hiking gear, and we were honestly only looking to go on an easy kid-friendly stroll.

We decided on the Flagstaff area. The trail started near one of the first designated picnic spots and took us through a pine tree forest with plenty of shade. Fields of wild flowers decorated every turn. We didn't get very far, though. Our daughter walked at her own pace and seemed more interested in the rocky terrain crunching beneath her feet; totally fine for us and just enough activity to burn off some energy before nap time.

While our daughter might've been more interested in the rocks, we couldn't help but notice the surrounding views just beyond the pine tree perimeter. Instead of a sea of deep blues, like back home, we soaked in the view of lush green trees dotting the town below. It was just what we needed after our long travels from Hawaii.
