This holiday season, our family swapped surfboards for ice skates when we checked out the indoor ice skating rink at the Hawaii Convention Center. It's part of the first-annual Winter Wishes–A Holiday Festival, a month-long event that also includes photos with Santa, food, shopping and kid crafts.
Here's what you need to know before you go!
Get winter-ready. In Hawaii, we're always looking for an excuse to dress up in cute winter clothes–despite it being nearly 80-degrees year round. That's why it's no surprise the indoor event, chilled to keep the ice frozen, brings out the very best in Hawaii's winter-wear game. Don't be a scrooge and dress up! Or at least bring something warm to wear.
All-day access. This is probably the best $15 ($30, if you multiply by two adults) we've spent in a while. Children under 2 years old are free, while weekday entry is cheaper. The one-time fee is for all-day access and a free photo with Santa. Shopping mall Santa pics might cost double that! Plus, you can use your own camera (Santa selfies are the greatest)–even though there's a professional photographer on site. We even got a free digital caricature of our daughter!
The more, the merrier. Depending on the level of jolly, festival-goers might want more than what's offered with the entry fee. Ice skate rentals ($10), socks ($3 or BYO), gingerbread house kits and hot cocoa cost extra. If you parked at the Convention Center, then, well, that's not very jolly–but it's an extra $10 for all-day parking.
Discounts and disco. Every day, the event offers special discounts for members of the military, hospitality workers and marathon runners. If the discounts don't apply to you, then what about disco? Check the event's website for fun events, like super hero skate party and 70s disco party.
