Hurricane Douglas had Hawaii on edge last week. It teetered between a Category 3 and 4 storm as it approached the state, with winds up to 130 mph. For a while, it looked as if a few of the islands were going to experience the brunt of Douglas. But at the last minute, it veered off and grazed just north of the state as a Category 1 hurricane–about 45 miles north, to be exact. That's the closest a hurricane has ever gotten in the state's history.
While it thankfully didn't bring the forecasted flash flooding and landslides, it did whip up the ocean enough to bring a frenzy of surf. Once Douglas passed over Oahu, we set out on a surfari to the east side. Of course, we weren't the only ones with that idea. We pulled up to a spectacle of surfers putting on a show for dozens of beach-goers crowding the shoreline. Everyone was stoked on the 6-8 feet swell. And let's be honest, stoked to have been spared once again during Hawaii's dreaded hurricane season.
We wanted to share some of our favorite shots capturing the after-math of Douglas on Oahu. The sky felt very moody that afternoon, but it lit up right before sunset, putting on a show of its own!
