Sunset sessions (and sandy PJs)

Updated: Jun 9, 2020

When chicken nugget dinners become part of the quiver, you know you've reached new milestones as a surf parent. The toddler favorite is on the menu for most of our sunset surf sessions; so are cold beach showers and sandy PJs.

Definitely not our proudest moments as parents! But perhaps some of the most memorable, as we'd take advantage of longer summer days by heading to the beach right before dusk. And what used to be just boards and beach towels have since evolved into a bunch of baby things. For us, it's sand toys, swim clothes, life vest, beach tent, beach wagon and of course, snacks.

Despite the packed car and maybe a bit of chaos, as we run around the house filling our beach bag with last-minute things, there's no better way than ending the day with a sunset session. Sometimes there's only enough time for one of us to surf. If it's small, usually I'll paddle out; otherwise, Noah paddles out if it's bigger.

I'd like to believe that's just a surf parent mentality; as long as one of you gets to surf, it's rewarding for both. Happy wife, happy life?

Whenever we surf Ala Moana Bowls on a Friday evening, we're treated with a free fireworks show by Hilton Hawaiian Village. It happens right around dusk; spectators gather on the beach and in the parking lot for the quick show. We usually hang out a little after, too, since the parking lot gets jammed up after the fireworks.

On the way home, we secretly hope Liv falls asleep. She's usually already bundled in her pajamas after a cold beach shower. But even if she doesn't, and she gets to bed a little later than usual, we know it's okay. It doesn't happen often and when it does, it usually means we had the best time making the best memories.
