It's like taking turns in who'll get the next doodoo diaper–but much better smelling and with an outcome possibly more rewarding than a fresh baby bum; the ultimate mom-dad tag-team effort: the surf swap!
We were so proud of ourselves after our first official trade-off as new parents; a fresh, four-month-old Liv part of our quiver, we took turns paddling out at our favorite spot on Kauai. Luckily, there was plenty of shade–and waves–to make it a successful surf sesh swap.
As with anything in parenting, it takes some effort–juggling baby things with boards and bags. But then again, so does a trip to and from the grocery store. We manage because glassy waves are just as much a necessity as eggs, bread and diaper rash cream.
Of course, trading off today is so much different than with a little, little Liv who would nap on the sand instead of throw it. But despite her older, more active 14-month self, we'd say it's still key to:
Get there early. Not only will it be cooler, but it will also be less crowded–if you time it right. Show up during the change of shift between the dawn patrollers and the mid-morning crew. Oh, and when baby is about to take her first nap. Even if your little is only on one nap a day, earlier is still better for everyone.
Find shade. Whether it's a palm frond or a pop-up tent, shade will guarantee happiness in the heat. It might even be worth buying a cheap beach umbrella if you're traveling or finding out beforehand if your overnight accommodations have one for rent. The places we surfed at in Australia rarely had shade, and although I packed a small handheld umbrella, it wasn't ideal for a toddler who managed to skirt around the shade.
Make it count. Although your sessions might be shorter with baby on the beach, make every wave count–even if it means milking it to the inside, or waiting patiently for one really good set. Either way, it's a win–win; Mommy and Daddy get to wet their gills, while baby is having fun on shore!
