Overpacking can be a pain–in the back. Lugging around extra stuff slows you down when adventure's about to ramp up. Avoid turning into a pack mule and unpack a few items for your next surf trip, like a towel.
Mainly, they're bulky and take up space. Traveling, in general, is easiest with a light load. But when you're hopping from a plane to a boat to a remote island in Indo, bring the least amount of stuff. Boats and small charter planes have weight and space limits, too.
You might be tempted to pack towels as extra padding in your board bag. Unless secured really well with tape, they wiggle around and add unwanted weight. Bubble wrap or pipe insulation have been our choice of lightweight, compact padding for boards.
Once at the surf destination, your lodging will most likely provide towels–especially if it's a place near beaches or somewhere known for its ocean lifestyle. Request them before arriving, and request extra when traveling with little ones. Even those remote islands will have small (although sometimes big and luxurious) surf resorts. Trust us, they'll have plenty of towels for a day trip to the beach.
And if that day trip to the beach looks more like a boat trip to an outer reef break, then skip the towel and drip dry. Wearing a rash guard or wet suit is a good idea, too. Don't be "that guy" on the boat with way too much stuff. You're there to surf, so expect to be wet most of the time anyways.
But if you really must bring some drying device, then pack a sarong instead. They're lightweight and take up no more space than a pair of board shorts. Places, like Indonesia, sell cheap sarongs at marketplaces around every corner. They may not have the wicking potential of a towel, but they still get the job done. Buy one and then pack it back as a souvenir–or give it to your girlfriend so she can post up underneath its shaded canopy while you surf.
